Things to remember before traveling with your credit card abroad
- Make sure we have your correct mobile number. Update it in the Vanquis App or you can call us
- We charge a 2.99% fee for using your credit card abroad. We call it a "Non-Sterling Transaction Fee"
- Always check your credit card expiry date before you start your trip
- It's wise to take multiple payment methods with you while travelling, in case of emergencies
Make purchases using your credit card abroad
You can use your Vanquis Visa credit card in over 24 million shops, takeaways, restaurants and other merchants throughout the world, everywhere you see the Visa sign.
In some countries, you may be asked to sign a receipt rather than enter your PIN to authorise a purchase. Your signature on the receipt will be checked against the one on the back of your Vanquis Visa credit card, so always sign the reverse of your Vanquis Visa credit card as soon as you receive it.
When you use your Vanquis Visa credit card to make a non-sterling transaction we will charge you a fee of 2.99% of the amount of any non-sterling transaction (known as the Non-Sterling Transaction Fee). You will see this referred to in your Credit Card Agreement as ‘Foreign Transaction Fee’.
You will incur a Non-Sterling Transaction Fee if you buy something in a currency other than Sterling, even if you physically make the purchase in the UK. For example, this could happen if you bought something online from a non-UK website in, for example, US Dollars.
The exchange rate on which this Non-Sterling Transaction Fee will be calculated is set by Visa and will be the exchange rate on the date the transaction is processed which may be different from the date of the actual transaction. To see the current and historic rates visit www.visaeurope.com and click on the Cardholders section.
Withdrawing cash abroad
You can use your Vanquis Visa credit card to withdraw cash from over 2 million cash machines worldwide - everywhere you see the Visa sign. If you withdraw cash abroad, it will be in the local currency of the country you’re visiting, so there’s no need for you to queue at a foreign exchange counter.
In respect of each Cash Transaction (any withdrawal of cash from a cash machine, or financial institution, displaying the Visa sign; or purchases of currency and cash related transactions, such as purchases of travellers cheques, money orders and money transfers including directly to your personal bank account; or gambling transactions) we will charge a fee of 3% of the Cash Transaction amount or £3, whichever is the greater (known as the Cash Fee). This will show on your monthly statement as ‘Cash Advance Fee’; in your annual statement and in your Credit Card Agreement as ‘Cash Transaction Fee’). You will also be charged a Non-Sterling Transaction Fee for each Cash Transaction.
Please be aware that interest on a Cash Transaction is charged from the date transactions are applied to your account until payment is received. There is no interest-free period on Cash Transactions. You’ll need to take into account any other restrictions when withdrawing cash, such as daily cash withdrawal limit. Please see your Credit Card Agreement for more information.
You should also be aware that some cash machine operators may apply a direct charge for withdrawals from their machines and this will be advised on screen at the time of the transaction.
The table below shows the cost of withdrawing cash abroad using the Vanquis Visa Card on 5th June 2017. Exchange rates fluctuate every day. To find out what the rate is on a certain day, visit www.visaeurope.com and click on the Cardholder section.
